The George Wright Hotel is located in the heart of Rotherham and boasts a remarkable 400-year history, showcasing stunning original features that have been beautifully renovated to a high standard.

In my opinion, this hotel has the potential to be one of the finest in the region. However, the recent upgrades and renovations by the new owner seem to lack the necessary attention, reflecting the broader decline in Rotherham, where cost-cutting appears to be the primary concern.

The presidential suite, the most opulent room in the hotel, initially impresses with its design tailored for honeymooners and couples seeking a romantic getaway. It features a period-style bath that fits two, located within the bedroom, alongside a separate ensuite bathroom with a wet room. The king-size bed is adorned with a chandelier and spotlights, offering views of the town and courtyard through the window blinds.

In the bedroom, you'll find a full-length mirror, a clothing rack, and an armchair, while tea and coffee are served on a desk with an additional chair.

The staff at the hotel are exceptionally friendly, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A real fire is lit most days, providing a cozy nook within the hotel. However, many original features are not complemented by equally high-quality furnishings, which detracts from the overall ambiance and fails to highlight the building's unique character.

Breakfast is served in a pleasant restaurant surrounded by windows, which opens up to a courtyard with outdoor seating and heating for enjoyable evenings. At the back of the property, there is a large marquee designated for guests who wish to smoke.

This hotel holds tremendous potential, but there needs to be a shift in attitude towards service. Currently, staff members often sit with paying guests during their shifts, and delivery drivers use the same entrance as patrons, disrupting the dining experience. A better coordination of these activities is essential.

With some thoughtful changes, this hotel could truly shine by enhancing service and presentation. There are numerous pieces of unused equipment and furniture visible in the open that should be stored away to improve the overall impression.

While discounted rates offer great value for a stay, the full price falls short of expectations. If improvements in service and an awareness of how to create an exceptional environment are implemented, this hotel could become outstanding; as it stands now, it hovers between fair and satisfactory.

Comfortable room however we booked a king size bed and I don't think we had that, the curtain hook was falling off the wall and the room lacked any decoration. However, the staff were very helpful on checking in and we had a lovely breakfast. Though it did feel like we were somewhat in the way as they seemed to be setting up for an event around us while we ate.

The first room I was in was a double. The bed was badly made (sheets not tucked in) and the blind was broken and window ledge dusty. After a work call at the table, I sat on the end of the bed and the mattress went all the way down to the floor. |No phone, so went back to reception and the manager came down (lovely man). He lifted the mattress and there were no slats on the bottom end - what there was were all pushed to the head of the bed and one or two were broken.||I asked to be moved to another room. The other double I was advised had a broken radiator. So I was moved to a ‘delux’. The bed wasn’t broken (yay). There were black spots on the bathroom and hallway walls (mould?). The curtains did not block out the constant light from the courtyard at all. The tv powered up, but would not connect any channels. Cheap poorly put together flat pack furniture. ||As a solo traveller though, my main concern was the lack of security. There was a door on the downstairs level, that led into a tiered courtyard down a lane way to a gate on the Main Street. Neither locked. There was no separation of the hotel rooms from an entrance. The land way on ground level - was litter strewn, I saw a couple of condoms and a used needle. There was no privacy lock on the door. I ended up using a door wedge and a chair against the door. It just felt dodgy. ||Food - lovely burger. Staff perfectly polite. But this is in no way (a) worth the money, or (b) a boutique hotel.

Found hotel described has deluxe restaurant nice lovely cooked breakfast with great service our room was in basement no windows lots of stairs room clean but second bed base stained nice clean bathroom says hairdryer but couldn't find one woke at 3.40am by fire alarm when arrived was charged for parking £5 would not describe has luxury

We stayed here NYE, the room was lovely, modernly decorated and bed was very comfortable. The staff here give such a nice warm welcome and attend to any requests. When we come back from an event early The Manager happily served us in the little bar at reception and engaged in conversation when he didn’t need to. Reasonably priced and will definitely be returning. Thank you !

Wish could give it a zero, what’s known in the trade as a ‘ratter’||Unclean, scruffy stained carpets, blinds with layers of dust on them.||Disinfectant that strong made eyes water but still didn’t mask foist/damp smell||Wouldn’t want anyone to stay in such a dirty hole.

DO NOT!!! book a meal here! we booked for Sunday roast and ended up walking out with out even tasting anything! when it came them smell was revolting everything was warmed up leftovers the gravy was full of lumps everything was disgusting! and in my opinion the chef should be sacked for serving such horrible food! and on our way out I told him exactly that! we won't be going back! 😡

Perfect stay, staff are fab! I stayed for 4 nights as I was working in Rotherham from Glasgow. I was very looked after zyra for me went over and above. Massive breakfast. Clean friendly family environment.
